I am going to take this for a ride. Thanks Google for making everything easier!!!

I recently installed Windows XP SP1 on my Macbook. This was very easy to do but I got into major problems attempting to upgrade to Service Pack 2 (SP2). Apparently Mac’s are only meant to install SP2 and don’t allow the automatic upgrade.

After trying the upgrade in safe mode to no avail I did some internet searches. The most common was calling for a splitstream install of Windows SP2. I would advise against this. I did find a much simpler solution at WindowsReference.

It just calls for a simple edit to the Windows registry which I detailed below.

1. Click Start – Run – Type “regedit” and press enter.

2. Navigate to

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]

\Software
\Microsoft
\Windows
\CurrentVersion
\Setup

3. In the right pane, Right-click and select New – String value

4. Name it as “BootDir” and set its value to “C:\”

I would add however restarting your computer after this change.

But this 100% worked. Windows runs perfectly for that ONE program I need it for. And it allows upgrade to SP3 without any headache. I wish Apple would include this in Bootcamp though. I hope this helps anyone out there having this problem.
